When I tell people I make my living from blogging, they are usually suspicious. I have a nice lifestyle, I live in a beautiful home, I have a new car, I travel frequently and I have a flexible lifestyle. I guess most people assume that bloggers are scraping by, but the truth is many bloggers are making 5 or 10 times as much as the average salary, all while working from home! There are a bunch of different ways to make income through blogging, but I wanted to cover a few of the main ones so you can better understand what options are available to you if you would like to start making money through blogging.
1. Collaborating with Brands
This can take many shapes and forms such as doing paid giveaways, paid reviews, sponsored posts or site-wide advertising. All of these types of advertising have their pros and cons and the amount of money you will be able to make will depend on your site’s rankings as well as the volume of traffic you get. The more traffic and audience you have, the more money you will be able to charge for these services. This is a great way to make money online, but often it is one-off payments so depends on a constant stream of clients to ensure your income is regular.
2. Affiliate Programs
This is a great way to make money with a blog which is often a pretty consistent form of income. I love affiliate income because it’s generally a passive form of income. Once you have done the work to grow a blog with a great volume and have successfully added affiliate links to your site, you can sit back and enjoy the returns of your hard work. You can work with a bunch of different affiliate programs, but what you choose in the end will probably depend a lot on your blogs theme as well as your audience.
3. Selling Products
Many bloggers sell products, whether it is branded merchandise or things of use. For example Jodi from LegalNomads.com sells Gluten free cards that help you communicate your gluten allergy issues in a range of countries. This is a simple product to design, but provides real value to her readers, many of which suffer from gluten issues and struggle when traveling. She’s found a need in the market and is helping her readership while earning an income from a blog. She actually sells a wide range of products on her site, but I found the gluten free cards to be the most interesting.
4. Sell Courses
Many bloggers sell courses or programs to help new bloggers learn the ropes of the blogging. You can find courses on how to drive traffic to your site, how to increase your social media channels such as Pinterest and Facebook, or how to make money through affiliates. There’s so many things you can talk about when you are an experienced blogger, and maybe new bloggers are prepared to pay for courses if they think they will help them become more successful faster. Of course, you need to make courses that provide real value, but if you have a passion for blogging, a proven success story and a love of teaching, this could be a great way to make extra money while blogging.
5. One on One Coaching
Working online can be challenging, you often do not have the traditional work place setting which does help to keep you accountable. As such, many online entrepreneurs turn to coaches to keep them in line and help them push through mental barriers. If you love helping people and have a passion for coaching, you could use your blog as a way to find clients and to make money through coaching. I do believe that coaching takes a special skill set, but there are many resources available such as books and videos online that can help you learn how to be a coach. Be warned though, helping other online business owners to achieve success can be extremely addicting!
Do you have any other ideas for ways you can make money while blogging? I feel that this market will only increase as more of us turn to blog for information and entertainment.
