About 5 and a half years ago I started toying with the idea of making an income online. My motivations were simple: I didn’t really like having a boss, wanted to be able to travel or live where I wanted, and also I liked the option of being able to work in my PJs.
Obviously working online provides you with a freedom you couldn’t otherwise get. You can work from anywhere with a reliable internet connection! But don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security, because a reliable internet connection may be more challenging to find than you think. Regardless, it gives you more freedom than a traditional type of employment, but there are so many more reasons that working online is badass and you might not have thought of them. Here are my favourite reasons:
1) You Can Leverage Currencies
I live in Guatemala which is maybe a ‘medium’ on the expenses list for expats. My life here isn’t as cheap as I had originally expected, but certain things are quite inexpensive. For example, I have a lovely maid that comes and helps me with my cleaning, shopping, etc twice a week for $3.90 per hour, which is ridiculously affordable. I earn in USD, Pounds and Australian dollars and I spend in GTQ. I earn in countries where the living costs are more expensive, and I live somewhere where the expenses are cheaper. It’s pretty great.
2) You’re Participating in an International Job Market
New Zealand is a relatively small country and as such the opportunities are limited. By working online, you can transform your job market into an international market, allowing much more diversity in the types of positions you can apply for.
3) You Can Start an Online Business With Low Start-Up Costs
When else has there been a time in history when it’s been so affordable to start your own business? When I started my first blog, I think the only thing I spent money on was hosting and a theme. I probably started the blog for less than $150 and during the course of its lifetime it’s made me tens of thousands of dollars. What kind of return is that? AWESOME. Of course I invested a lot of my own time, but it was a hobby so it didn’t really feel like work.
4) You Can Maximise Your Free Time
There’s nothing wrong with living in the city/town you grew up for your entire life. But I always knew that would never be enough for me. I wanted to learn to speak Spanish, but somewhere I’d actually use it. I wanted to walk around the Alhambra in Spain, take a boat through the Amazon at night while the stars pierced the sky, and ride a hot air balloon over Bagan in Mayanmar.
By working online, I was able to do all of those things while earning an income. I didn’t need to segregate my life, offering 50 weeks a year of work time and cramming all my adventures into a tiny two week period.
Now I have more of a base, I can spend my free time doing things that would be difficult or expensive if I was back home. Such as taking private one-on-one Spanish classes for a few hours a week, learning salsa, and butchering Guatemalan recipes.
5) You Can Get Creative With Taxes
This may not be a priority for you, as some people I know personally are very disappointed in the fact I was enjoying all the benefits while I grew up in NZ and now I’m an adult I live somewhere else so I have no tax obligation to NZ. That’s a whole other story, but for me, at this stage in my right, being creative with my tax status is a great advantage to me. It allows me to save more of my money, to hopefully invest it and to provide more financial security to myself and my family.
No one in my immediate family has owned a home, so that’s a big motivation for me to hustle, save, and get myself on the property ladder smartly.
Living in Guatemala affords me both a lifestyle and tax benefits I could not get at home and I’m grateful for this opportunity.
6) You Can Reduce Your Work Related Costs
Please just take a moment to add up all your work related costs, from paying for parking, gas to get to work, maintenance of your car to get you there or public transport, and then add in the costs associated with nice work clothes, make up, shoes, lunches at work and so on and you’ll be surprised by how expensive it is to work. By being able to work online – and from home – you can eliminate almost all of those costs. Yes, you’ll have to dress yourself still, but if you want to spend a week (or month) working in your work out gear, no one will know!
It’s amazing how expensive it can be to actually work, but working online will reduce many of those costs – wahoo.
